The objective of this beginning course is to acquaint the landscaper with the discipline of planning on paper for a long range or immediate working landscape; to make the landscaper aware of the many plants that can be used; and to increase awareness of all the colorful and unusual features that can be included in the landscape.  Each session will have a lecture, a “show and tell” of plant material, and time for questions and answers.

Learn about the history, legend, lore, and practical uses of roses, as well as simple growing techniques. Learn about the history and culture of herbs and edible flowers.  Work on crafts, discuss fragrances, and enjoy a potluck dinner.  Textbook and crafts are available at an additional cost.  Week 1: Introduction to herbs (history & legends, culture & care) – planning and planting herbs, soil preparation and when to plant, the right herb for the right spot, herbs for full sun and fragrant and shade loving herbs. Week 2:  Herbs for decoration/learn what to plant for drying, fragrance and crafting, (optional craft – small wreath of fragrant herbs and flowers $25), Week 3:  Tour the herb and kitchen gardens (Saturday class) – collect small bunches of herbs to take home.  For additional cost can make a patio pot of herbs (reminder – bring clippers and container), Week 4:  Culinary uses for herbs (teas, sautés, etc.), discuss the best ways to grow culinary herbs, recipes using basil and other popular herbs given out, how to make teas and other herbal treats, Week 5:  Covered dish dinner! Exchange recipes (always some surprises at this event), discover additional uses for herbs, door prizes (guests are allowed, but you must make an additional dish).
